The Faculty of Linguistics, Cultural and Civilization Studies, Art Studies at the Goethe University Frankfurt / Main, Germany, invites applications for the following position: Full Professorship (W3) in the intellectual history of Islam: Islamic philosophy, ethics and mysticism in Islamic Studies. We are looking for a candidate with high competence and expertise in the entire field. He/She is expected to be familiar with all areas of intellectual history of Islam, i.e. Islamic philosophy (falsafa), mysticism (tasawwuf) and ethics (akhlaq) and will be able to teach these subjects. The main research focus shall cover the contextualization and actualization of classic philosophical, ethical, and mystic subjects within modern fields of research such as bioethics and/or medical ethics as well as the study of present developments of religious ideas in Islamic countries. Furthermore we expect theoretical and practical experience in the field of inter-religious dialogue. An excellent competence of Arabic is requested as well as mastery of at least one other language used for Qur’an translations. Knowledge of the German language is an advantage.
The candidate will supervise existing Magister, Bachelor and Master programs of Islamic studies and Islamic religious studies. We also expect experience in creating new courses of study and commitment to the development of Islamic studies, as well as a willingness to engage in interdisciplinary discourse. The candidate is expected to collaborate with other professors in the possible development of a future Islamic studies center. Teaching experience in Islamic studies, pedagogical qualifications as well as a commitment to mentoring students and young academics are of particular importance. Experience in procuring and executing third-party funded projects are an asset.
The designated salary for the position is based on “W3” on the German university scale or equivalent.
